New GM ad: Hey, thanks for that taxpayer bailout, America

The occasion for this spot is last week’s IPO, which wasn’t quite the Popeye-eating-spinach moment as this vid might lead you to believe. For one thing, they’re still not remotely close to paying back all the money they owe: According to ProPublica, GM itself is still on the hook for close to $30 billion while GMAC owes close to $15 billion more on top of that. Mickey Kaus, meanwhile, offers upwards of a dozen reasons to believe, per the boxing analogy in the clip and despite The One’s insistence, that GM hasn’t yet gotten up off the mat and might not be getting up anytime soon. And not surprisingly, thanks to Obama’s largesse towards the UAW in brokering the initial bailout deal, it turns out that the union ended up being the big winner from the IPO, recouping $3.4 billion from share sales and positioning itself to break even if GM shares rise modestly. By comparison, share prices would have to soar for the feds to get back to zero, and as for longstanding GM investors, well…

Do You?

Do you have a “right” to fly?

And yes, there is a perfectly valid argument to be made that the government’s proper role in preventing these disasters involves stopping terrorists long before they make it to the Jet Blue check-in counter with a couple of pounds of C4 shoved up their nether regions. But we also must be honest enough to admit that in this sort of unconventional warfare, attacks can and do come in all shapes and sizes from every possible direction. Our intelligence agencies can’t settle for catching 99.7% of the bombers because the attackers only have to get it right once. And given that premise, don’t we want one last chance to stop them just before they board the plane?

. . . we should examine the protests over these search policies in terms of people “having their rights violated.” Do you really have a right to fly? Nobody is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to get on the plane. There is virtually no place on the surface of this planet that you can’t get to through a combination of boats, trains, buses, taxis and/or rental cars, providing you have the time to do so and plan ahead. Precisely what “right” of yours is being violated if the airlines (and/or the TSA) specifically warn you in advance that you will be subject to these specific search practices before you are allowed to board the aircraft?

The “Anonymous Complaints” Exception To Free Speech?

Video: School tells student to remove flag from his bicycle

School in latest flag flap: student now allowed to fly the flag again

Ed Parraz, the Superintendent of the Denair School District told us a school supervisor asked Cody to take down the flag. The supervisor will not be fired or face repercussions. Parraz says the supervisor had information that Cody Alicea’s safety was at risk because of the flag. Some students had complained about it and had apparently made threats.

“The last thing we wanted was to deny Cody his rights,” said Parraz speaking about the boy’s wish to fly the American flag.

Well, that statement is demonstrably false. The last thing Parraz and the school wanted to do was take action against the students making the threats.  The first thing they did was to deny Cody his rights.  They silenced him instead of dealing with the real problem, which is about as clear a case of administrative cowardice as one could find.

News, Information And Opinion

"Everybody's focused on our trade imbalance with the ChiComs. 'We have to figure out a way to export to them.'  No! We have figure out a way to create American customers, period, for anything.  Until you create consumer demand in this country, you can whistle Dixie about having export parity with the ChiComs."

When Will People Learn That Democrats Don't Want to Unify?
A (D) next to the name is all you ever need to know.

"The number one objective of the Democrat Party is to establish a permanent
underclass.  That's the route to the real number one priority, which is reelection."

If you want to make a conservative angry, tell him a lie.  If you want to make a liberal angry, you tell 'em the truth. It works every time it's tried."

News, Information And Opinion

» American Spectator:  The Winner is Rush Limbaugh

"Why should people who make $250,000 or $500,000 or $1 million pay a higher burden for the folly and irresponsibility of people like Obama and most people in government?"

O'Donnell and Angle Explained: The party needs to get behind all our candidates, not just elites.

Obama is a Failure and a Liability to His Party -- They're in disarray and the Clintons are scheming. Obama's goal is to get the GOP to buy into his failed policies in the name of "compromise." Resist!

"All this talk of compromise and bipartisanship is aimed at one thing only: Getting the GOP to shoulder the blame for Obama's deficit commission, which is going to push new taxes and huge tax hikes."
